Researcher Profile: Professor Tony Owen

Professor Tony Owens has a list of credentials a mile long, but it’s his latest title that makes him an Australian first.

The former president of the International Association for Energy Economics has been named the inaugural chair of Energy Economics at Curtin.
Energy economics, which previously stretched across multiple departments, combines engineering, political sciences, geology and ecology to research supply and use of energy in societies.

His role as Co-Director of the Oil and Gas Management Area of Research Excellence will unite the faculty of Science and Engineering and Curtin Business School in resources-based research.

Fresh from presenting his report into future electricity requirements to the NSW Premier, Professor Owen will also build links with industry and government in this important emerging area.

The broad discipline examines issues ranging from regulation, taxation, markets, strategic management, technology development and IT to exploration, production, transportation, retailing and distribution of energy products.

Originally graduating with a PhD in Econometrics from the University of Kent, Professor held appointments across the United Kingdom, United States of America and Europe before moving to Curtin.

Professor Owen is the Australian Association for Energy Economics president, CSIRO Energy and Transport Sector Advisory Council member, Royal Statistical Society fellow and serves on the International Boards of Energy Policy and Energy Sources.
