As 2024 draws to a close, we reflect on a remarkable inaugural year for the Planet Positive program. From welcoming our first scholarship recipients to engaging students in sustainability initiatives, this year has been a testament to the power of collaboration and innovation in creating a better future.

Welcoming the First Planet Positive Scholars

In August, we celebrated a significant milestone by awarding scholarships to four inspiring students: Lilli, Helena, Alicia, and Samantha. These individuals embody the program’s mission of fostering sustainability leaders and have shared their personal insights into what this opportunity means to them.

Samantha expressed heartfelt gratitude:
“To the donors of the Planet Positive Scholarship, I would like to express my gratitude for your generosity and commitment to sustainability. Thank you for believing in the potential of students like me to contribute to driving positive change. Your support is so much more than just financial aid; it’s an investment in my dedication to sustainability and environmental conservation. I am committed to honouring this incredible opportunity by making a positive impact and contributing to a more sustainable future.”

Helena reflected on how the program aligns with her goals:
“Planet Positive is important to me because this directly aligns with my passion for creating a sustainable future in the mining industry. Being part of this program is especially great because I am able to participate in solutions that reduce environmental impact while making the industry viable. After graduation, I hope to work alongside leading mining companies on sustainable practices while minimizing environmental impacts and meeting global resource demands.”

For Alicia, the scholarship fuels her ambition to reduce event waste:
“Working in major events, there is so much waste generated, and I would love to one day create environmentally friendly ways of managing this. This scholarship means so much to me; not only does it drive me to do my absolute best, but it’s so nice to know that people want to invest in our learning and future. A scholarship is a huge deal, and I am so grateful!”

Lilli highlighted the importance of sustainability education:
“Planet Positive is important to me as I have always had a passion for sustainability. The specialisation fits well within my degree as I am studying environmental science. However, I believe the units taught in the specialisation are important for all people to learn, given the challenges of climate change.”

Connecting Through Volunteerism and Community

In July, the Planet Positive program partnered with the Botanic Gardens and Parks Authority for a restoration planting event at Kings Park. Despite the Makuru weather, 18 Curtin students, alumni, and staff united for a morning of meaningful work, contributing to bushland restoration near the Tobruk Memorial.

Inspiring Learning and Innovation

Our Lunch-and-Learn series provided a platform for sustainability experts to share their knowledge. Highlights included:

  • Renae Tapley of Future Materials discussing advancements in low-carbon building materials.
  • Andrew Hayim De Vries of WastePlant introducing innovations in organic waste management.
  • Carol Dowling, a Badimia Nyarlu (Badimia Woman Leader), hosting a Yarning Circle that fostered cultural and environmental understanding.

Engaging Future Changemakers

Over 250 high school students participated in Planet Positive workshops throughout the year. The Changemakers for Sustainability program in October was a standout success. Held at the Curtin Bentley campus, this three-day event brought together 40 high school students who developed sustainability solutions with guidance from university academics and industry leaders.

Expanding Educational Opportunities

We’re thrilled to announce the addition of the Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) to the growing list of undergraduate degrees offering Planet Positive as a specialisation. This expansion reflects the program’s relevance and the increasing demand for sustainability-focused education.

Looking Ahead

As we conclude this milestone year, we extend our heartfelt thanks to the donors, partners, and participants who have made the Planet Positive program a success. Your support is already shaping the next generation of leaders committed to driving positive environmental and societal change. We eagerly anticipate welcoming a new cohort of students in 2025 and sharing their stories as we continue to grow this impactful program. Together, we are making strides toward a more sustainable future.
