Update: digitisation of the Melanesian Film Archive
Over 500 films from this unique Archive have now been digitised
2023 in the Curtin University Archives
Highlights from Curtin University Archives activities and project work in 2023
Archiving Binar-1 satellite mission artefacts
Earlier this year, the Archives recognised the significant nature of Western Australia’s first satellite mission to space and worked with the Space Science and Technology Centre (SSTC) to ensure the long-term preservation of these unique records and artefacts.
More recently digitised negatives from 1979-1980
We are continuing to digitise 35mm film negatives for their long-term physical preservation, and to provide the community access to these records of the university’s foundational years as the Western Australian Institute of Technology.
Project update: architecture drawings
We have been working on a significant archive of original architectural drawings from the 1930s-1970s that require conservation treatment, description, cataloguing and archival rehousing in order to ensure their ongoing preservation.
Recently digitised: university wall calendars
We recently had the physical university wall calendars professionally digitised. A calendar can be thought of as a somewhat ephemeral object, but the 1969-2023 collection shows a progression of the university’s priorities, services and style.
Project update: recently digitised film negatives
In our custody are thousands of black and white film photographic negatives of our campus from 1978-1979. We recently had a selection professionally digitised to archival standards. They are an incredible record of the activities of staff and students almost 50 years ago.
Project update: School of Nursing and Midwifery
We have been developing the collections related to the School of Nursing and Midwifery in preparation for the 50th anniversary next year.
Architecture project
The Archives team has commenced work on a large historical collection of Western Australian architectural drawings and plans.
Nursing 1974-2024
In preparation for the 50th anniversary of the Curtin School of Nursing and Midwifery in 2024, we have begun planning a collection development project.
Digitisation of WAIT historical photographs
We are currently digitising a large collection of historical photographs, 35mm film slides and negatives.
Digitisation of the Melanesian Film Archive
Digitising these rare 16mm films commenced in late 2021 and will take several years to complete.
