While students studying a higher degree by research (HDR) gain multiple benefits from a workplace internship, industry partners also benefit greatly. Capabilities of HDR candidates such as problem-solving, creativity, research, and critical thinking provide potential for industry to broaden mindsets. For students, successful outcomes rely on effective preparation prior to the internship.
Join us for the HDR Internship Preparation Workshop happening on 18 September. Two in-person sessions are occurring on the day.
Session one: Why Do an Internship and How to Find One
This session of the HDR Internship preparation workshops focuses on students’ personal and professional identities with reference to employability, communication, resilience, and goal setting. Students will explore approaches for sourcing workplace opportunities and strengthening networks to optimise career readiness. Students will build confidence through engaging with peers in interactive activities, sharing ideas, and clarifying aspirations.
9:30am–11:30am
Session two: Design Thinking for Project Planning and Industry Collaboration
In this session, students will apply design thinking processes to solve industry-based problems. Students will work collaboratively to scope problems and design projects, outline a process for approaching and clarifying the problem, and identify the various components of the project scope.
Strategies for negotiating with industry, communicating outcomes, and presenting confidently and assertively will be discussed. Reflecting on your professional identity and shaping a personal brand will also feature in this workshop. Students will broaden their perspectives through cooperative engagement with peers and shared learning experiences.
