Empowering Women in STEM

In the ever-evolving fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), transforming gender representation is more urgent than ever. Recent data from the Department of Industry, Science and Resources reveals a significant disparity, with women making up only 37% of enrolments in university STEM courses. This gap highlights the critical need for targeted support and initiatives.

Supporting women in STEM is not just about equity, it’s about enriching the entire industry. Diverse teams enhance problem solving and creativity, driving innovation and progress. Early exposure to STEM subjects is vital in sparking interest and fostering a love for these disciplines among young girls.

Building a robust talent pool in STEM requires a collective effort to break down barriers and create opportunities. Contributing to funds that support women in STEM is an investment in the future, ensuring a diverse and dynamic workforce capable of tackling the world’s most pressing challenges.

By supporting these initiatives, you can help Curtin inspire the next generation and create an inclusive pathway where women can thrive in STEM.

Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow

Girls+ Engineering Tomorrow (GET) is an outreach program aimed at increasing the visibility of engineering among girls and non-binary high school students. By connecting students with role models and offering engaging workshops, GET inspires and guides participants towards studying an engineering degree at Curtin. This program ensures continuous support and exposure, crucial for maintaining interest and building a strong foundation in STEM disciplines.

Christine Foster Memorial Fund

The Christine Foster Memorial Fund was established in memory of Christine Foster, a trailblazer in the mining industry who graduated from the WA School of Mines in 1996. Known for her dedication to improving standards and breaking down barriers for women in mining, Christine tragically died in 2000. Her legacy lives on through a scholarship created by her fellow alumni to honour her contributions and support future generations of women in STEM. The scholarship is dedicated to female students studying a science or engineering degree.

The 2023 recipient of the Christine Foster Memorial Scholarship, Lily Edwards, a mechatronic engineering student, reflected on how receiving the scholarship has encouraged her to aim even higher in her studies and empower other young women to pursue a career in STEM. “STEM offers so many amazing opportunities to make a difference in the world. I’d love to encourage and mentor more young women to pursue their passion for it. I’ve been lucky enough to be supported by a scholarship for women in STEM and I’d like to support women who are aspiring to develop STEM careers in some way too.”
