Our new student exhibition Metempsychosis: the archival revival, peers into the University’s special collections and emerges with new takes on old ideas. Visit the exhibition at Library Makerspace (Building 105, Room 302) from Friday 16 June until Friday 30 June.
The concept of metempsychosis explores themes of transformation, recontextualizing the archives to portray new perspectives and question traditional interpretations. Our archival revival looks at new views – a creative visual commentary on history and intergenerational dialogue through the lens of photography and illustration students. This practice is an inspired way of looking at the “old stuff” where nothing is original, only reimagined.
At the start of semester our student artists were invited to “speed date the special collections archive” at the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library to select a piece as a source of inspiration. They developed their creative research projects in the Library’s Makerspace, utilising the resources and equipment in the space and experimenting with unfamiliar practices. The result is a fascinating collection of art reimagining the past.
The exhibition is a shared partnership between the Makerspace, the John Curtin Prime Ministerial Library and second year Photography and Illustration students. This is the second iteration of students enrolled in the Image Design Culture unit collaborating with the Makerspace & JCPML.
