Curtin University Library has unveiled a new exhibition on level 3 of the TL Robertson Library that delves into the science of stress and offers practical ways to enhance wellbeing. Titled Drink Water Keep Breathing, the exhibition takes visitors on a journey through the biology and evolutionary roots of stress, showcasing evidence-based strategies for managing it. With interactive stations, attendees can explore and practice various stress-relief techniques, including exercise, meditation, laughter, mindfulness, and reconnecting with nature.
Developed in collaboration with Curtin University partners, the exhibition features insights from psychologists from Curtin’s Counselling and Disability Services, trainers from Curtin Stadium, and professional staff from Act Belong Commit. This multidisciplinary approach ensures a rich, well-rounded exploration of stress and wellbeing.
The exhibition begins by examining the stress response and physical impact of stress hormones on our bodies—spoiler alert: it’s not always beneficial. Visitors will gain an understanding of the wide range of stress triggers, from the unique challenges faced by university students to global events and internal stressors. Even John Curtin wasn’t immune to stress and its effects!
Drawing from the latest research and theories on stress, Drink Water Keep Breathing highlights various evidence-based techniques to combat stress. Whether it’s connecting with friends, staying active, or helping others, visitors will learn how these activities can significantly improve wellbeing. Additionally, the exhibition emphasizes the importance of one’s mindset towards stress, helping students recognise that stress is a natural and expected part of life.
A key feature of the exhibition is its interactive component. Visitors are encouraged to engage with five core wellbeing activities, such as immersing themselves in nature with a green space and forest sounds in the Library’s foyer. They can also enjoy a hearty laugh, try mindfulness meditation on a comfortable beanbag, or work off stress on an exercise bike.
With QR codes linking to further information and research, the exhibition invites everyone to explore new ways to support their wellbeing. Attendees can find clubs to join, activities to try, and resources for additional support—all backed by the latest research and practical insights.
Drink Water Keep Breathing also offers visitors the chance to interact through activities like answering a topical question about wellbeing or engaging in mindful play with LEGO, jigsaw puzzles, and colouring.
This exhibition is an invitation to learn, experience, and adopt simple yet effective methods for managing stress and enhancing overall wellbeing. Drink Water Keep Breathing will be on display until October 2024 and is located near the main entrance of the TL Robertson Library at the Curtin Perth campus in Bentley, Western Australia.
