Janice Chan is the Manager, Library Research Services, currently acting as Deputy Director, Learning, Research, Engagement and Global. We spoke to Janice to learn more about her background, work experience and her role.
I was born and raised in Hong Kong. I came to Perth to further my education as an international student and returned home with a Bachelor of Business. After a few life events, I decided to move to Perth, Western Australia, and I have been calling this beautiful boodja home since 2002.
Shortly after I returned to Perth, I pursued a Graduate Diploma of Science (Information Services), which qualified me to become a professional librarian. I enjoyed working in public libraries and special libraries, but my passion has always been in digital libraries and repository services, so naturally I was drawn to a career in the academic library sector.
2024 is my 10th year working at Curtin University Library. My substantive position is Manager, Library Research Services. It is a very rewarding role, in which I lead a team of high calibre specialists to provide a range of research services including research data management and publication, institutional repository, open research, research impact and metrics, strategic publishing, copyright, and research and writing skills programs.
I am currently acting in the Deputy Director role, which allows me to flex my leadership capabilities and drive impactful initiatives in collaboration with other university areas that make a difference to the students and staff journeys at Curtin University. Even though I have been working here for a long time, there is still so much to learn, and every day is different! It is an absolute privilege to work with a diverse, resourceful, and innovative Library team.
