Marcus Whelband recently joined the Library as Coordinator, Research Services. We spoke to Marcus to learn more about his background, work experience and his new role.
Having been in the workforce for more years than I care to remember, I’ve had an interesting journey getting here. I started in the hospitality industry as a front of house manager. Having witnessed the rise of information technology (IT) in that industry, and no longer wanting to work +60 hour weeks, I moved into IT working across a number of roles across most, if not all, industries. My final role in the United Kingdom was a decade at The Open University. The Open University which is a different institution to that of Open Universities Australia, the university ran as a normal campus however all undergraduate students were distance learners. My role there was to manage the process by which we transformed the academic content, written in Microsoft Word or typesetting program, TeX, into multiple outputs required for distance learning.
We moved to Australia just over a decade ago with my most recent role being at Flinders University in Adelaide, South Australia, where I managed the suite of research & HDR applications and the high performance computer.
Outside of work I’m a keen triathlete and have had the pleasure of representing both Great Britain and Australia at world championships. I am hoping to perform in another world championship next year as two of the distances I race are in Europe so I can tag on a family visit. As well as competing I also have my Australian and Great British coaching badges and help coach a squad here in Perth.
