Over the next couple of months, Library staff will be working to implement a new User Interface (UI) to our Leganto Reading List system. The changes will make the platform easier and more intuitive to use, improving the user experience for the academic staff who create them and the students who rely on them.
What are Reading Lists?
Reading Lists allow academic staff to curate a list of readings for their unit, incorporating a range of resources from materials available through the Library’s collections to web-based content like YouTube videos and podcasts. Accessible through Blackboard, Reading Lists enable a one-stop shop for students, ensuring that they can access all of the most useful content for their studies quickly and easily. Item tags and notes allow time-poor students to focus their efforts between essential and recommended readings.
It is a requirement that all units have a Reading List in accordance with the Curtin Course Quality Assurance Manual.
What’s changing?
The look and some of the functionality of Reading Lists will change, but the core mission of the software – connecting students to supporting resources within their units- remains the same. To ensure an easy transition to the new UI, the Reading List team at Curtin University Library is currently working hard to update our self-help resources. These how-to guides will step staff through the process of creating a new Reading List or rolling over an existing one, making clear any changes or opportunities for enhancement. In addition, the team will set up sessions in the lead-up to the start of semester one, demonstrating the new system and answering any questions on maximising it’s impact.
As part of the transition, the Library has undertaken a review of the tags that are used to communicate information about a reading to students. We will be streamlining the options available and ensuring the language is more consistent with what’s used in unit outlines.
We will also be launching a Reading List service charter so that the Curtin University community better understands how the service works. So, watch this space!
If you have any questions about Reading Lists in the meantime, or you regularly create Reading Lists and would like to provide feedback, don’t hesitate to get in touch via email: ReadingLists@curtin.edu.au.
