As the semester is officially over, the winter break has arrived. Unfortunately, not everyone has the time or budget to jet off to enjoy a European summer. But don’t worry, we have put together a short list of fun things you can do in Perth this winter without breaking your bank account.
Explore Rottnest Island
It is the must-see island and your chance to capture the ultimate Quokka selfie. Rottnest Island is an easy 25-minute ferry trip from Fremantle and winter can be the perfect opportunity to beat the summer crowds. There are no cars on Rottnest Island, so be prepared to ride a bike or walk around the island.
Go on a hike
Perth has kilometres of tracks and trails for hiking. Some interesting trails include the Bells Rapid Walk Trail in Brigadoon, and a section of the 900km Bibbulmun Track in Kalamunda. A great inner city option is to check out the bush trails in Kings Park. If you decide to go on a trek ensure you wear comfortable shoes and have plenty of water and food supplies.
Pop-up cinema
The team behind the popular Fringe World Festival and Rooftop Movies have opened the Girls School Cinema, located in East Perth. The uber-cool cinema is housed within the grand Art-Deco building which was once a school and also a police training centre. The winter movie season runs until 12 October.
Head to the country
Get out of the city for the day and go on a road trip to one of the many small historic towns outside of Perth. Some places to check out include the historic monastery town of New Norcia, the picturesque towns of Northam and York, and Jarrahdale which is located deep in the forest.
Check out a weekend market
If you love food, then the numerous weekend markets around Perth are a great way to buy and eat some of Perth’s best food. Some popular Perth markets to check out are the Vic Park Farmer’s Market, Leederville Growers Market, Perth City Farmers Market, Growers Green Market, and the Kalamunda Farmer’s Market. Before you go be sure to check the dates and times, it can vary in winter due to the weather conditions.
