The opportunity has come up for Curtin University students to volunteer their time to support the FIRST LEGO League competition by acting as Robot Game Referees and Judges. You’ll have the chance to help with the running of the event and to inspire and encourage future STEM visionaries!

What is the FIRST LEGO League?

The FIRST LEGO League (FLL) is a robotics and innovation competition for 9-16 year olds. In teams of 2-10, kids will program a LEGO robot to complete missions and present an innovation project to judges.

At the competition, teams gather and compete with and demonstrate their LEGO Robot, engaging with hundreds of other like-minded kids, all in a fun and lively atmosphere!

When is it?

From mid-November to mid-December, the Curtin STEM Outreach team coordinates 11 FLL competitions around Western Australia:

EVENT DATES
Saturday 12 November – Tapping Regional at St Stephen’s School Carramar
Sunday 13 November – Australind Regional at Treendale Primary School
Wednesday 16 November – Aveley Regional at Aveley Secondary College

Volunteers would be required for a full day, with most weekday events happening 9am to 3pm, and most weekend events 8am to 4:30pm.

Students are invited to volunteer at one or more of these events.

What is required of the volunteers?

Students have the choice of being either Robot Game Referees or Judges.

As a Robot Game Referee, you will need to be across the rules of the Robot Game, be good with kids, and will be on your feet for most of the day. Your role will see you at the front and centre of all the action of the competition! You can watch a full Robot Game on YouTube to better understand the game.

There are Judging opportunities available for students who are and aren’t from a STEM/robotics background, the most important thing is to be excited to motivate and encourage the kids with their projects. Learn more about the judging process on YouTube.

All volunteers are required to either have an existing Working With Children Check, or be able to sign a form for one on the day of their volunteering.

How do I sign up?

You can register your interest to be a FLL volunteer, or just get some more information by completing the registration form.
