Siblings Cameron and Louise Burns not only study at Curtin University of Technology’s Bentley Campus, they also both recently formed part of the winners circle for the national Advancing Australia Fairly competition.

Cameron won the essay section of the national competition which encourages university and TAFE students around the nation to think about their contribution towards shaping Australia’s future, whilst his sister Louise was one of only six runners-up in Australia.

Cameron explained that his entry was inspired by the cultural diversity at Curtin.

“At Curtin, different cultures all get along together, and there is an acceptance of different backgrounds and religions. I was also inspired by stories on current affairs programs such as Four Corners,” Cameron said.

Cameron’s essay provides insight into Australia’s cultural triumphs and tribulations, and makes unique suggestions for a harmonious future.

“Events such as the 2006 Soccer World Cup show supporters coming together from different countries to support their teams, and they do so harmoniously,” Cameron said.

Louise’s insight into today’s Australia and the way forward for a harmonious tomorrow was also recognised by competition judges. The essay promotes programs such as student exchange and migration initiatives to combat skills shortages in the Australia.

Louise said during high school she was only exposed to those of a European background, however this all changed upon arrival at Curtin.

“When I came to Curtin, I experienced different cultures getting on well together, and it was so good to see this happen,”

Louise’s essay pinpoints the formal apology to Australia’s stolen generation as a major step forward for the country.

Cameron is studying for a Bachelor of Engineering (Civil and Construction) and Louise is pursing a double degree in Social Science and Commerce.

They attended a formal presentation in Sydney recently. Their full essays can be accessed at the website http://www.movingforwardtogether.com.au/.
