The John Curtin Gallery will open its doors on 28 September for its popular Sunday@Curtin event featuring two unique fashion exhibitions.

House of Tarvydas is an anniversary retrospective exhibition paying tribute to designer Ruth Tarvydas, while Looking Out profiles five young Western Australian fashion designers who are making headlines overseas.

House of Tarvydas is a survey of 40 years of garment and fashion design by Tarvydas and includes several gowns that made headlines in their day.

Looking Out profiles the diversity and individual style of ae’lkemi, Aurelio Costarella, ericaamerica, Material Boy and Megan Salmon.

Curtin University of Technology’s Dean of Art, Professor Ted Snell, said the exhibition was the first thorough examination of Western Australian fashion at a major gallery.

“These two exhibitions are very complementary because Ruth represents the emergence and growth of fashion design in WA and the designers featured in Looking Out are continuing her example by operating globally from a local base” Professor Snell said.

These exhibitions are open free to the public between 12noon and 5pm Monday to Friday and 1pm to 4pm on Sunday 28 September. Both exhibitions close on 10 October 2008.
