Curtin University of Technology acknowledges the recent findings of the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) indicating Curtin FM radio station was in breach of the Broadcasting Services Act 1992, during July and November 2007.
The complaint, outlining the alleged broadcast of sponsorship announcements in excess of five minutes per hour has been addressed by Curtin FM and the responsible presenters counselled to ensure this situation is not repeated.
Curtin FM has been in operation since 1976 offering a radio service to the 45 plus demographic with easy listening music from the 60s, 70s and 80s. It has an excellent history of community service and continues to offer a resource to students, staff and volunteers.
Mr Quinn Glasson, Station Manager of Curtin FM, is confident the station has addressed the oversight and will ensure it operates within the boundaries of ACMA’s Broadcasting Services Act 1992 in future.
“Curtin FM endeavours to provide a service which is within the rulings of the Australian Communications and Media Authority,” Mr Glasson said.
“Some of the historical issues with interpreting the sponsorship guidelines have been clarified and we are looking forward to a continued co-operative, working relationship,” he said.
Curtin University of Technology’s Executive Director of Corporate Communications, Val Raubenheimer remarked on Curtin FM’s positive contribution to the WA community.
“Curtin FM delivers an outstanding service to our listeners, thanks to the dedicated team of volunteers who give up their time to contribute to the station,” Ms Raubenheimer said.
“The dedication, loyalty and enthusiasm shown by all those involved in the station, including our small core group of staff, ensures that Curtin FM remains an important part of the community. Many of our volunteers, together with staff and students, are active in developing the station and value their contribution to the greater community,” she said.
Curtin FM is Western Australia’s first community broadcaster. Today the station offers hands-on training to large numbers of Curtin students studying various disciplines as well as the opportunity for volunteers to assist in various areas of the station.
