A $10,000 cadetship will be offered to students who start a mining engineering or metallurgy degree at the Western Australian School of Mines next year.

Twenty WA School of Mines (WASM) cadetships will be available to students who select a mining or metallurgy course in Kalgoorlie as their first preference for tertiary study in 2011.

The cadetships, facilitated by the WASM Graduates Association (WASMGA) in conjunction with the mining industry and the City of Kalgoorlie-Boulder, will also link a student with a mining company and create the opportunity of vacation employment.

WASMGA President Tony James said the cadetships would give students a fantastic head start in their career.

“Not only will the recipients of these cadetships receive financial assistance, they will also be linked to a mining company,” Mr James said.

“This will provide students with the chance to build relationships with people in the industry and increase their chances of gaining valuable vacation employment.”

First-year mining engineering student Ashlee McKenna received the cadetship last year and said there were benefits to studying in the heart of the Goldfields.

“I think it is great studying a mining-related course in Kalgoorlie where the mines are because it gives you a more hands-on experience,” Miss McKenna said.

Miss McKenna is sponsored by Barrick Gold and has three months paid vacation work lined up over the Christmas break.

“The cadetship money has been enough to get me through the entire year this year and the vacation work will also help financially for next year,” she said.

“It’s given me a good start.”

WASM Director Professor Steve Hall praised the cadetships and the benefits it offered students.

“This is a further demonstration of the fantastic industry support our students receive from day one at Kalgoorlie,” Professor Hall said.

Cadetship applications close Friday, January 7, 2011. Inquire to WASM.
