Highly regarded mining expert Professor Peter Lilly will return to Curtin University in January 2011 to fill the new role of Executive Director, Minerals and Energy Strategy.
Professor Lilly will lead strategic business partnerships with the resources industry, particularly through the Curtin Institute of Minerals and Energy (CIME).
Reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Development, Professor Lilly will work closely with the Faculty of Science and Engineering, especially the Director of the West Australian School of Mines (WASM), and the University’s broader Research and Development team.
“Professor Lilly’s appointment is further commitment by the University to minerals and energy research and education,” Professor Linda Kristjanson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Development, said.
Professor Lilly joins Mark Woffenden and Tim Walton in the leadership team of the CIME.
“This is an exciting time to join Curtin and have an instrumental role in strengthening the partnerships with research, education and industry in Australia and around the world,” Professor Lilly said.
“Curtin’s expertise is readily available to offer direct responses to the minerals and energy sectors as they develop innovative science and technology to enhance their business operations.”
The CIME draws together Curtin’s extensive research and education capabilities in the areas of mining, geosciences, minerals and energy economics, petroleum and chemical engineering, environmental health, corrosion technology and sustainability. The institute offers innovative, cross-disciplinary solutions to the challenges faced by both the minerals and energy sectors, and the communities in which they operate.
Professor Lilly joins Curtin from his previous role as Director of CSIRO’s Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship. Professor Lilly was formerly Chief of CSIRO’s Division of Exploration and Mining. He was also Professor of Mining Engineering (1999-2004) and Director of the WASM (2004-2006) at Curtin.
He is currently a Member of the Western Australian Government’s Mining Industry Advisory Committee.
Professor Lilly has served on the boards of Snowden Mining Industry Consultants from 1997 to 2004, the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy from 2001 to 2008 (where he was President in 2006) and the Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame from 2005 to 2008.
Since receiving his doctorate in South Africa in 1978, Professor Lilly has held positions in mine operations and development, academia, mining research and consulting engineering, and has worked on projects located in 15 countries.
Professor Lilly, who has lived in Australia since 1980, was elected to the Fellowship of the Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering in 2007. He is a Fellow and Chartered Professional of the AusIMM, a Fellow and Chartered Professional of Engineers Australia, a Registered Professional Engineer of Queensland and the holder of the Corporate Director’s Diploma. In 2008, he was awarded both the Sir Willis Connolly Medal and the Beryl Jacka Award by the Australasian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy.
