An eclectic mix of furniture pieces and light fixtures designed by Curtin University Interior Architecture students will be on display at the Grove Library in Peppermint Grove from Tuesday 7 December.
Lights created by transparent cassette tape covers, tables welded from old bicycle sprockets and chess tables made from acrylic cut offs are just some of the 15 items that will be showcased.
Wilma Van Boxtel-Zoethout, School of Built Environment lecturer, said the third-year students were asked to design a prototype of a piece of furniture or light fixture from waste materials or industry cut offs.
“The aim of the furniture design unit was not only to focus on the design process, but also to design an environmentally friendly furniture piece that considered all the stages of production, including the transport of equipment and material in the design,” Mrs Van Boxtel-Zoethout said.
“The end results are very diverse, with students welding bicycle sprockets, shaping acrylic waste from phone booths, transforming cassette tape covers into lamp shades and turning a car tyre into a seat.”
Ms Van Boxtel-Zoethout said there is a lot of material that would normally go straight into a land fill.
“Creating desirable pieces of furniture from recycled materials or objects is a good start to increasing a product’s life cycle,” she said.
The Grove Library has recently been transformed into a sustainable building with environmentally sensitive design features.
