Curtin University student Karmini Eswaran will be making an important contribution to the smooth running of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Perth this month.

The final year mass communication and public relations student is volunteering in the CHOGM media centre.

Karmini, who is currently living in Bentley, is an international student from Malaysia – one of the Commonwealth nations represented at CHOGM.

“I am really excited to be involved with this prestigious event in Australia because it will help me gain invaluable experience. I am really looking forward to being involved with the international media,” Karmini said.

Karmini is one of 21 Curtin public relations students who will be helping out in the media centre at CHOGM, undertaking a variety of duties from escorting journalists to media conferences and assisting at conferences. It is expected there could be up to 300 media representative attending conferences.

Associate Professor Nigel de Bussy, from the School of Marketing, Curtin Business School, said the high-level event was a great opportunity for Curtin students to utilise skills they had developed over the course of their studies.

“CHOGM will bring the leaders from Commonwealth countries to Perth for talks that help shape the future of the Commonwealth,” Associate Professor de Bussy said.

“It will give Curtin public relations students an invaluable experience in dealing with important events of a political nature on an international scale.”

The heads of government from 54 Commonwealth member countries will be heading to Perth for the three-day conference including South Africa, Namibia, Canada, Nigeria, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan and Malaysia.

Queen Elizabeth II will also be travelling to Perth to attend the meeting, at the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

CHOGM 2011 will be held from Friday 28 October to Sunday 30 October.
