Curtin University Health Promotion student has won an Injury Control Council of Western Australia (ICCWA) Community Safety Award.
Ms Kristen Hunt, a final-year Bachelor of Science student in Curtin’s School of Public Health, was presented with the Student Award in recognition of her work on a recent student fieldwork.
The ICCWA awards recognise the achievements and leadership of students in the area of injury prevention and community safety. Ms Hunt’s contribution was especially acknowledged as an asset to the placement team, where her hard work and dedication had left a lasting impression.
Ms Hunt worked across a number of projects including a community violence prevention strategy for the North Metropolitan Area, consulting with a community sub-group and compiling an action plan report.
Ms Hunt said she was overwhelmed by the nomination and found it motivational to receive recognition for the work she did, which had found so rewarding in itself.
“I learned great skills and a new perspective on working collaboratively with members of different organisations while working towards a cause that is so prevalent in our society,” she said.
“Injury prevention is often not seen as a public health issue but ICCWA are doing amazing things in WA, as one of the first organisations to tackle community violence with the piloted Community Violence Prevention Strategy (CVPS) in the Girradoola area which includes Girrawheen, Mirrabooka, Koondoola and Balga, and it was exciting to be a part of that.”
Ms Hunt was presented with the prestigious accolade by Professor Fiona Wood, Director of the Royal Perth Hospital Burns Unit and the WA Burns Service.
ICCWA is the peak non-government not-for-profit organisation involved in injury prevention and the promotion of community safety in Western Australia. The ICCWA Awards are held annually and raise awareness about community safety and injury prevention and recognise organisations taking extraordinary steps to make their community safer.
