Director of Advancement (Health Sciences) at Curtin, Mr Tony Hume, has been appointed to a key role championing the development of the Yinhawangka people in the central Pilbara.
The role of Independent Member of the Decision Making Committee of the Yinhawangka Benefits Management Structure is to bring about positive outcomes to the community especially in the areas of education, health and housing.
Mr Hume has had extensive experience of administering trusts and working with Indigenous communities to assist them with their native title benefits fund.
He said he was honoured to have the opportunity of building partnerships with the Yinhawangka people to foster sustainable business models, positive education outcomes and employment opportunities.
“The Yinhawangka people face many challenges, and I look forward to helping them not only to maintain their culture but to move forward.
“Building partnerships with the community, industry and the government will be the key to success,” Mr Hume said.
Selected from a national competitive search across Australia, Mr Hume is highly regarded for his work with Indigenous communities.
The Decision Making Committee comprises six members, four Yinhawangka people, one trustee company representative and an Independent Member.
Mr Hume will hold the position for two years.
He has been employed at Curtin since 2009.
