Performance Studies students from Curtin’s School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts have been selected to attend a Performance and Mask workshop in Bali under the guidance of renowned Danish mask teacher Per Brahe, and local dance teachers and mask makers.
The ten second and third-year Curtin students who will participate will be accompanied by senior lecturer, Dr Leah Mercer, and Professional Associate, Mr Philip Miolin, who will also conduct training during the workshop.
“The workshop fuses traditional Balinese and Western performance processes,” Dr Mercer said.
“Performance techniques developed from the traditions of Balinese music, dance and mask work will be combined with Western acting techniques and devising training. The workshop will be presented by European, Balinese and Australian teachers.
“This combination of training will deepen the participants’ creative practice as actors and theatre makers. This is a fantastic opportunity for our students,” Dr Mercer said.
The workshop will also include field trips to local performances, mask makers and sites of cultural significance.
The trip will take place between Saturday 30 August and Sunday 7 September at the Purnati Centre for the Arts in Gianyar, Bali and is part of a Government-funded Study overseas Short-Term Mobility Program.
Workshop leader Per Brahe is an internationally renowned mask teacher, as well as professional director, writer, actor, teacher and painter.
