Cisco Innovation Centres aim to catalyse and showcase innovation and development, bringing together customers, industry partners, start-ups, application developers, government organisations and universities.

The Centre, which is due to open in mid-2015, will create a state-of-the-art connected community focused on leveraging cloud, analytics, cyber security and IoE network platforms.

Professor Graeme Wright, Deputy Vice-Chancellor Research and Development said the initial focus at Curtin would be creating solutions in industries Australia had already established global strengths and leadership in, such as resources, agriculture and astronomy.

“Curtin University has been a major player in the development of Australia’s capability underpinning the SKA and has built a broad base of computational and data scientists, so we are well advanced to host the CIIC lab at Curtin,” Professor Wright said.

“Perth is also emerging as a leading technology hub in Australia for the oil and gas industry and pushing the technology boundaries of computation and big data analytics as a result of investments in radio astronomy and supercomputing.

“We look forward to working with our partners to help unlock the economic and social benefits of the CIIC.”

Senior Vice President Asia Pacific and Japan at Cisco, Irving Tan said Australia is a sophisticated market with a high level of innovation and an early adopter of new technology.

“Australia is already highly regarded globally for its resources and agriculture sectors and is well-placed to serve the rapidly growing Asian markets and the Australian Government has prioritised these sectors accordingly,” Mr Tan said.

“The country is also a leader in scientific research and Cisco has been involved in the Square Kilometre Array project for over five years. The aim now with the Cisco IoE Innovation Centre and its ecosystem of partners, is to accelerate innovation and the adoption of IoE in Australia.”

A CIIC node will also be opened in Sydney based at SIRCA. The interconnected labs in Sydney and Perth will enable work to be undertaken on both east and west coasts.
