Curtin University has appointed Professor John Cordery as its new Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, commencing on 1 July 2015.
Professor Cordery joins Curtin from The University of Western Australia (UWA) where he held senior leadership positions including Chair of the university’s Academic Board and Head of Management and Organisations at the UWA Business School.
He began his career at Curtin in 1982 as a lecturer in psychology, before moving to UWA in late 1991. Since that time he has built a highly regarded research profile and academic career.
Curtin Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the University conducted an extensive international search to fill the position and she was delighted Professor Cordery had accepted the role.
“Professor Cordery will bring a very strong academic and research background as well as significant management and leadership experience to the position, and I look forward to working closely with him as a member of Curtin’s senior executive team,” Professor Terry said.
“We are very pleased to welcome Professor Cordery back to Curtin.”
Professor Cordery said he was thrilled to be appointed to this key role at WA’s largest university and looked forward to the challenges it would bring.
“I am very much looking forward to working with Professor Terry and the senior leadership team to help achieve the University’s vision to become an international leader in research and education,” Professor Cordery said.
Professor Cordery was Head of Management and Organisations at the UWA Business School from 2003 to 2012, and Associate Dean (Research) in the School from 2005 to 2007 and again from 2010 to 2011. Most recently, he held the position of Chair, Academic Board and Council at UWA.
His expertise spans the business-related disciplines of organisational behaviour and human resource management. He completed his PhD in Industrial/Organisational Psychology at The University of Sheffield (UK).
As Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Professor Cordery will provide strategic leadership and oversight of the University’s academic affairs and quality enhancement, and will have overall responsibility for the University’s faculties.
Professor Cordery succeeds Professor Colin Stirling who left Curtin in October last year to take up the positon of Vice-Chancellor at Flinders University in South Australia. Professor David Wood, who has since acted in the role of Provost and Senior Deputy Vice-Chancellor, will continue in the position until Professor Cordery commences.
