A new smartphone app that encourages users to become more active and improve their overall health and wellbeing has been launched today at Curtin University.
The CurtinMoves App, launched at the start of Curtin’s Orientation Week, is part of a national initiative funded by Sport Australia through the Move it Australia Grant that aims to increase activity levels by helping users find their 30 minutes of activity each day. It is currently available to Curtin staff and students and will be rolled out to the wider local community throughout February.
Head of Sport and Recreation at Curtin University Mr David Russell said the app offered a great opportunity for registered users to increase their activity levels while studying, working or visiting Curtin’s Perth campus.
“It is important to create engaging opportunities for both students and staff to help reduce stress levels and improve clarity of thinking, while also building connections with other students and colleagues on campus,” Mr Russell said.
“The CurtinMoves App will allow registered users to track their activity levels and workouts, challenge their friends to see who moves more, gain access to activities on campus, join in on-campus challenges, and find out information about the latest Curtin events.
“Curtin is excited to be involved in the trial of this new app, alongside other Australian universities, which helps students, staff and members of the local community find ways of increasing their activity levels, whilst also connecting with others to improve their quality of life.”
As part of the app, users will have access to a ‘virtual coach’ that will help guide workouts and build personalised training programs including cardio and strength classes. Curtin Sport and Recreation will also be running monthly challenges where participants can compete against one another and go into the draw to win a selection of prizes.
Curtin is one of 11 pilot universities who have their own customised app available for download through the App Store or Google Play. Further information on the CurtinMoves App can be found online here.
