Global Ethics and Human Rights Scholar, Anthony J. Langlois, has been appointed Curtin University’s inaugural Stan Perron Dean of Applied Ethics in the Faculty of Business and Law, to guide and shape the next generation of responsible leaders.
Professor Langlois brings more than 25 years of experience as an educator and authoritative voice on ethical issues to the position, which has been created in partnership with the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation.
Curtin’s Faculty of Business and Law Pro Vice-Chancellor Vanessa Chang congratulated Professor Langlois on his appointment.
“We are delighted to welcome Anthony as the first Stan Perron Dean of Applied Ethics – an integral role which will not only help equip our students with critical thinking and ethical decision-making skills, but also play a vital part in in the establishment of the Curtin Centre for Applied Ethics,” Professor Chang said.
“Anthony is a trusted thought leader who brings a wealth of experience with a commitment to excellence and teaching from a distinguished two-decade long career at Flinders University.
“Our partnership with the Stan Perron Charitable Foundation is a pivotal milestone in Curtin’s commitment to ethical thinking and preparing our graduates to understand not just what they can do but what they should do when making business decisions.”
Stan Perron Charitable Foundation Chair Elizabeth Perron congratulated Professor Langlois on his appointment and looked forward to seeing the impact of his work in years to come.
“My father was renowned for his strong commitment to ethical business conduct and for him it was more than words, it was displayed every day of his working life,” Ms Perron said.
“It is arguably no better illustrated than in the trusting relationship he built with Toyota Motor Corporation where he held the rights to import the global giant’s vehicles into Western Australia for decades on the basis of a hand-shake arrangement.
“This was a unique arrangement that was a reflection of the trusted relationship between Toyota’s most senior executive and my Dad and their mutual respect for each other. It was just one example of many where Dad believed that by acting with integrity and honour, commercial success would follow.”
Professor Langlois said he was looking forward to taking on the new position.
“I am excited to be joining Curtin University and honoured to contribute to the legacy of Stan Perron, by building and enhancing Curtin’s reputation for ethical vison and leadership and developing ethical graduates who can make a positive impact,” Professor Langlois said.
“Challenging both students and colleagues to consider the ethical contours of their academic and professional activities has driven my work in research, education and leadership.
”I am also excited to help shape the new Curtin Centre for Applied Ethics, paving the way for mainstreaming applied ethics in the Business School courses and other curricula across the University.”
Professor Langlois is the author of The Politics of Justice and Human Rights: Southeast Asia and Universalist Theory (Cambridge University Press, 2001) and Sexuality and Gender Diversity Rights in Southeast Asia (Cambridge University Press 2022).
He earned his PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University and most recently was Director for a transnational Masters program in International Relations and International Business, a joint venture between Flinders University and China’s Nankai University.
He will take up his new role in October.
