Have you ever met someone whose journey combines curiosity and a desire to create a positive impact? Meet Anna, a captivating second-year student on a quest to unlock the mysteries of biomedical science at Curtin.
Anna’s fascination with genetics and the boundless potential of science ignited her desire to embark on a path to help others. It all started back in 10th grade when her curiosity was first sparked in science class.
And it was this curiosity that eventually led her to choose biomedical science.
What sets Anna apart is her unwavering passion for delving into the unknown. She is enthusiastic about the thrill of forging a path and discovering things that nobody may have ever known. In the world of science, Anna finds the motivation to overcome challenges and uncover solutions that can change lives.
“I like learning the newest possible cutting-edge discoveries of what’s going on and how those can be applied to help as many people as possible.”
Immersed in the challenges of her academic journey, it’s the depth and relevance of her studies that keep her motivated. She savours the chance to explore their potential applications in her future career.
When the first-year coordinator of her course suggested she get more involved in campus life, such as mentoring first-year students, Anna found herself intrigued by the idea and decided to sign up.
This led her to take on the role of an O-Week volunteer. Anna’s role as an O-Week volunteer revolved around making the transition into university life smoother for incoming students. Her role consisted of ensuring new students found their way around campus, scanning ID cards at venue entrances and guiding students to various events.
But what truly ignited Anna’s spirit was acting as a roaming volunteer. Her encounters with students who were uncertain about their surroundings or had questions about university life were great opportunities to share her experience and advice. Their relief and gratitude affirmed Anna’s love of helping others.
Anna’s involvement as an O-Week volunteer allowed her to step outside her comfort zone and extend a helping hand to new students navigating the campus. She also enjoyed making new friends in the process, which is what makes her recommend this experience to other students.
As for the future, Anna plans to take a year off post-graduation and then pursue further studies, possibly a Ph.D. Her goal is clear: to make a positive difference in people’s lives through medical research. The boundless possibilities of the field excite her, and she remains open to various specialisations.
