Meet Brianna, a Bachelor of Primary Education student who aspires to be a Deaf Educator one day. Her journey to university was a unique one, as she left school in year 11 to start TAFE and pursue a Certificate III in Early Childhood, then decided to have a gap year and worked domestically as a flight attendant before transitioning to an administrative role in a training organisation. It was during this time that Brianna discovered her passion for education, and realised how much she loved the concept of learning and decided to return to her studies, this time focusing on primary education online.
Starting her university journey amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, Brianna had to adapt to online learning, which initially felt daunting but quickly became appreciated for its interactivity and flexibility. She found particular joy in units like Creative Literacies, where she was inspired by passionate educators and explored innovative teaching methods.
Alongside her primary education studies, Brianna has been learning Auslan (Australian Sign Language), completing a Certificate II and currently working on Certificate III. During lockdown, she discovered an Auslan course within her allowed travel radius (Victorian lock-down rules) and decided to give it a go, something she had always been interested in. Since then, what started as a simple curiosity about Auslan has transformed into a deep-seated desire to become a Deaf Educator. After learning Auslan, Brianna is now motivated by the idea of empowering students with the choice between Auslan and hearing devices, ensuring their preferences are respected.
Outside of university, Brianna works in morning and afterschool care, where she finds her placements and coursework directly beneficial to her daily work. Over her experience, her placements have been a highlight, offering invaluable hands-on experience in various school settings, including low-socioeconomic areas, confirming her passion for teaching. Studying has helped Brianna develop a greater sense of confidence both personally and professionally. She values her improved understanding of inclusive education, child development, curriculum design, and pedagogical practices.
Looking ahead, Brianna plans to take a break from university after graduating to focus on becoming the best teacher possible and completing her Diploma of Auslan. Brianna aspires to be a teacher who embraces students for who they are while encouraging them to strive for their fullest potential. She believes in recognising and nurturing their diverse strengths and qualities beyond just academic achievements. One day she dreams of returning to study with a potential post-grad in inclusive education, however for now is excited to get started in her own classroom.
Her journey to becoming a primary school teacher has been filled with diverse experiences, shaping her into a compassionate and dedicated future educator. Her passion for education, coupled with her dedication to inclusivity and diversity, will undoubtedly enrich any classroom and positively impact the lives of her students.
