It’s exam season, and we know how challenging it can be, for both domestic and our international student cohorts.

In our next episode of I’m at Curtin, Now What? our hosts and resident international students, Devna and Celena, share their insights and tips on coping with exams at Curtin, especially as international students. Watch the video below!

Here are five tips for coping with exams as an international student:

Get to know Curtin exam formats and expectations

Different countries may have varying exam formats for testing students, for example; multiple choice, essay-based or oral exams. It’s a good idea to understand the format that your course uses and what is expected from you. A good way to familiarise yourself with your courses exam structures is review past exam papers to get a sense of the questions asked and the level of detail you will be required to give.

Learn effective study techniques

Block out study sessions in your timetable that allocates time for each subject. Make sure to break down each of your study sessions into manageable chunks with breaks in between. You may even want to consider creating a study group with friends to test each other and your understandings of the course content.

Improve your language skills

If you’re still struggling with academic language, focus on improving the terminology specific to your field of study. Regularly practice by writing essays or answers to potential exam questions to cement your understanding of academic language and seek feedback from professors or peers to improve the clarity and coherence of your writing.

Prioritise your mental and physical health

Perhaps the most important part of coping with exams in making sure you are taking care of your mental and physical health. Regularly take breaks to exercise, and reduce stress and improve your concentration. Though it may be tempting to drink excessive amounts of coffee to help you get through long study sessions, its imperative to ensure you maintain a regular sleep schedule and balanced diet.

Furthermore, stay in touch with your family and friends back home for emotional support and connect with other international students who may be experiencing similar challenges.
