Ranjith is currently in his second semester of his Master’s program in Professional Mining Engineering at Curtin Kalgoorlie. Originally from India, Ranjith has had a deep-rooted passion for the mining industry ever since high school. Ranjith completed his bachelor’s degree in mining engineering at a university located near the Kolar Goldfields in India, an area known for its rich mining history. Post-bachelors’ graduation, he gained three years of field experience in India, which solidified his desire to advance his technical skills through further education.
Before moving to Australia, Ranjith worked extensively in underground mines in India, where he was involved in physically demanding shifts, often working up to 16 hours a day due to manpower shortages. His work experience made him acutely aware of the importance of integrating field knowledge with technical expertise, prompting his decision to pursue advanced studies. He chose to move to Kalgoorlie because of its strong industry connections and the practical exposure it offers through programs like Diggers & Dealers and weekly industry nights.
Although he faced challenges like cultural adjustments and homesickness, not all changes were difficult; he welcomed the 8-hour shifts in Australia compared to the 16-hour shifts in India. However, Ranjith adapted well, benefiting from the better work-life balance and improved sleeping patterns. Ranjith also found quickly that the local community, university staff, and fellow students were welcoming and supportive, noting that Australians made him feel welcomed with their smiles the moment he stepped off the plane.
Ranjith has thrived in the academic environment at Kalgoorlie particularly valuing the industry engagement opportunities. He highlights that the university’s programs that facilitate direct interaction with industry professionals, provide him with essential networking opportunities and practical experiences. These opportunities to interact were instrumental in securing a summer vacation job with Genesis Minerals, with his position becoming a testament to his willpower to further pursue knowledge and workplace learning.
Ranjith lives in student accommodation, which he finds economical and convenient as it is within a 5-minute walk to campus. He appreciates the proximity to his part-time jobs and the campus facilities. Ranjith advises new students to opt for on-campus accommodation at Agricola for its safety, convenience, and cost-effectiveness. He emphasises the importance of early application due to the high demand among international students. Beyond his academic and professional pursuits, Ranjith is actively involved in the Curtin Volunteers program. His first volunteering experience was participating in a tree-planting event, where he won a lucky draw, inspiring his further enthusiasm for engaging with the community and contributing positively. Ranjith plans to stay in Kalgoorlie after completing his Master’s, aiming to secure a job in the region. He prefers the affordable and practical lifestyle in Kalgoorlie over the Perth. His goal is to continue developing his mining engineering career in an environment that offers both professional growth and personal satisfaction.
