The Faculty of Business and Law is dedicated to sustainability and social impact, and working with Students as Partners. To reinforce this commitment, they launched the Carbon Literacy Program in 2023, which made a remarkable return this year.

The first training session of the year took place in April and was marked by a significant milestone: the involvement of Laura Pitts, a Curtin student who co-facilitated a session. Having completed her Carbon Literacy certification in 2023, Laura’s role as a facilitator underscores the program’s commitment to integrating student leadership into sustainability initiatives. As Laura shared, “The April session was a pivotal moment for the program. It was thrilling to co-facilitate and see our collective efforts in tackling climate change come to life.”

In its inaugural year, the program saw strong engagement, with 89% of participants from the first pilot program expressing they were “extremely likely” to recommend the training to their peers. This positive feedback highlights the program’s effectiveness in motivating individuals to take climate action. Daisy, one of the 2024 student participants, exemplifies this commitment: “I’m excited to learn about permaculture and aquaponics and am committed to promoting a circular lifestyle. I hope to inspire others with my efforts and encourage them to take their own steps toward sustainability.” Daisy is now volunteering at Perth City Farm to continue to make an impact and bring her pledge to life.“The workshop was incredibly impactful. It provided valuable insights into climate change and practical solutions for both individuals and organisations.” This focus on actionable knowledge has clearly resonated with participants.

All staff and students are encouraged to participate in future sessions and contribute to the shared goal of combating climate change. The program equips participants with essential knowledge and empowers them to make a meaningful impact in their communities.

What is the Carbon Literacy Program?

The training program, developed in collaboration with the University of Queensland and The Carbon Literacy Project, addresses key areas such as climate science, systemic and individual solutions, and effective communication strategies. The primary aim is to equip Curtin facilitators with the skills to train their own students and engage in online facilitation. The comprehensive program covers:

  • The science of climate change
  • Climate-related environmental, social, and economic equity
  • Solutions for achieving a zero-carbon world
  • Actions for individuals and organisations
  • Impact assessment of various actions
  • Effective communication techniques
