During the COVID-19 pandemic, Curtin introduced a self-certification option for assessment extension applications.
This enabled students to apply for up to five days of additional submission time beyond an assessment due date without having to provide formal documentation to support their request.
Curtin acknowledges the benefits of the ability to self-certify when applying for an assessment extension and will therefore retain the option but there will be some changes to the process and conditions, effective from Semester 2 2024.
What you need to know
- Self-certification is not permitted for all assessment types. Exclusions include:
- scheduled tests and examinations
- presentations
- practical assessments or performances
- group work.
- There is a limit on the number of self-certification requests you can submit, based upon your enrolled study load:
- If you are enrolled in 50 credit points or less in a study period, you are allocated one self-certification opportunity to be used within that period.
- If you are enrolled in more than 50 credit points in a study period, you are allocated two self-certification opportunities to be used within that period.
- Self-certification is permitted only once for any assessment for a maximum of five calendar days. If further extensions are needed, these must be supported by appropriate documentation.
- Each self-certification opportunity can only be used once, irrespective of whether you request an extension of one day or five days.
- Self-certification opportunities expire at the end of the study period and do not accrue.
- Whilst some self-certified applications are subject to auto-approval, requests may still be assessed for an outcome by the unit coordinator or delegate. You therefore need to provide enough information for the assessor to be satisfied that the reason you were not able to complete an assessment task was due to exceptional circumstances beyond your control.
We also want to encourage you to only utilise the self-certification option with valid reason to do so; it is in your best interests to submit your assessments on time, wherever possible.
Submitting on the set due date will allow you to move forward from the task and will facilitate timely feedback from your unit coordinator or tutor which will benefit you greatly as you prepare for your next assessment, and your studies beyond.
