Do you know what an international student looks and sounds like?

In our next episode of I’m at Curtin, Now What?, our international students and hosts, Devna and Celena take on a fun challenge—trying to guess who the real international student is among a group of domestic students!

The tricky part? They only get to ask 5 questions! Will they be able to make a good guess, or will some clever answers throw them off?

Tune in to the video below to see if they can spot the real international student, and join in on the laughs along the way!

What are some common misconceptions about international students?

“International students all look the same.”
Not at all! International students come from all over the world. You’ll find people from Africa, Europe, South America, Asia and beyond studying at Curtin. There’s no one ‘look’ that defines international students.

“International students struggle with English.”
Not necessarily! Many international students are fluent or are even native English speakers. Plus, tonnes of international students have already studied English before coming to Australia.

“International students might not know much about Western culture.”
A lot of international students are already pretty clued into global culture. Many grew up with Western media or even went to international schools.

“International students must feel so out of place.”
While adjusting to a new country can be tough, international students are often just like any other student: trying to make friends, study and have a good time. They bring fresh perspectives, but they’re here to learn and live like everyone else.

“International students don’t get involved much.”
On the contrary! International students are often super active in clubs, sports and social events. There’s heaps of clubs that are culture specific, and programs designed just for our international students to get involved in.
