Louise Ganderton, a first-year Curtin PhD student, has been awarded a Lung Institute of Western Australia (LIWA) Scholarship for 2010.
Louise, who is undertaking lung health research at Curtin, is also the first student from the University to receive such an award. She says the $30,000 three-year scholarship will help her concentrate on her studies.
‘I am delighted to be awarded this scholarship. It means that I will be able to continue my studies in a full-time capacity… allowing me to further explore, interpret, and gain a deeper understanding of my research area.’
Louise will be supervised by respiratory experts at LIWA including Sue Jenkins, head of the Physiotherapy Unit, and Eli Gabbay, head of the Pulmonary Vascular and Advanced Lung Unit.
Director of LIWA, Professor Philip Thompson, says the scholarship highlights the institute’s commitment to educational research.
‘We currently provide a range of educational research scholarships for students, young doctors, and scientists. LIWA is committed to attracting and supporting students who wish to pursue a career in research and in promoting research excellence in all areas of lung disease.’
