Years of hard work have paid off for Curtin’s Relay For Life committee – in more ways than one.
The team’s tireless efforts have seen the on-campus fundraiser draw bigger crowds and raise more money for vital cancer research each year, and its burgeoning success hasn’t gone unnoticed.
The Cancer Council WA recently presented Relay for Life Curtin with four awards at its Heroes of Hope Award Ceremony. Attended by more than 100 volunteers from across WA, the ceremony recognised the achievements of the state’s Relay For Life volunteers.
Relay For Life Curtin took out the Community Spirit Award for best local community engagement; the Team Growth Award for the largest increase in volunteer numbers; the Most Improved Event Award for the most transformed event from the previous year; and the Youth Spirit Award, awarded to one team member under the age of 25 who has engaged their local community to the fullest.
Marketing Development Leader for Relay For Life Curtin and MBA student Jamie Kho received the Youth Spirit Award and says he is delighted with the team’s commendations.
“It’s great that the entire committee has been recognised for all the hard work and effort everyone’s put in to make the event a success,” Jamie says.
“I’m very proud to be involved with a group of young people who care about fighting back against cancer.”
Jamie says the team is looking forward to this year’s Relay for Life Curtin event, which aims to be the ‘best yet’.
“We’re expecting to top the number of teams participating in last year’s event by almost 20. There’ll also be entertainment and activities for participants to enjoy, including live bands, a petting zoo and ‘bungee basketball’.”
Jamie explains that with roughly half of Australian men and one third of Australian women being diagnosed with cancer by the age of 85, fundraising for cancer research has never been more important.
Relay for Life Curtin is taking place over 17 and 18 October on Curtin University’s Bentley Campus.
