It was a chance encounter at the British Consulate that sparked Madisen Scott’s interest in law.
Until that moment, the recent high school graduate had been struggling to decide on the right career path.
“Like many high school students, I was changing my mind every day!” Scott laughs.
It was an introduction to a local university lecturer, an expert in humanitarian law, that would determine Scott’s future career.
“I was inspired by her passion and knew I would love to have a career where I felt the same way,” Scott says. “And the rest is history!”
Scott enrolled in a double degree at Curtin, specialising in law and international relations.
Working at the brand-new John Curtin Law Clinic was a highlight for the budding lawyer.
“Any time I get asked about my time at Curtin, I chew people’s ears off, bragging about how great working at the clinic was!” Scott says.
“The clinic staff were supportive and provided such great expertise and assistance. I was able to develop confidence and faith in my abilities with their support.“It was the best decision I made in my law degree.”
The John Curtin Law Clinic, established earlier this year, provides free advice and assistance to eligible small businesses based in Western Australia.
Curtin law students can enrol in a clinic-based unit and hone their legal skills on real-life cases.
Scott says law clinic manager and Principal Lawyer Rosaline Tan has since become a role model.
“She is passionate, knowledgeable and sincere,” Scott says with enthusiasm. “Not only has she had an amazing career in the legal field but she is a kind and approachable mentor.”
Scott’s passion and hard work have led to an exciting graduate position as Associate to Judge Antoni Lucev in the Federal Circuit Court.
And she credits her double degree with helping her excel in this challenging new role.
“The legal skills and knowledge I acquired at Curtin are critical to my role,” Scott explains. “A large percentage of matters I’m involved with are migration matters, for which my international relations degree has also been invaluable.
“Thanks to my studies I’m really familiar with the relevant human rights and United Nations frameworks for refugees.”
Scott says she is constantly on the go.
“My role varies day-to-day from opening the Court to liaising with Counsel and legal representatives to helping assist self-represented litigants,” Scott explains.
“I also assist His Honour with research on current matters, prepare for upcoming cases and communicate with the Registry and litigants as required.”
“While I’m busy, I thoroughly enjoy the work and that is so satisfying,” Scott smiles. “I learn something new every day.”
Scott has big plans for the future.
“It would be great to have an office like Harvey Specter [from Suits]!” Scott laughs. “Or maybe become the CEO of the AFL!”
“But ultimately I hope to still be enjoying my job, wherever it is, as much as I am now.”
