Changes to the amount you can borrow using HELP

From 1 January 2020, the Australian government is introducing a combined cap on the amount you can borrow to cover the cost of your tuition fees. This will be called the ‘combined HELP loan limit’ and will apply to you if you use a HECS-HELP, FEE-HELP, VET FEE-HELP and/or VET Student Loan.

  • The combined HELP loan limit will be $106,319 for most students or $152,700 if you’re studying medicine, dentistry or veterinary science.
  • The limit will be renewable, so if you reach the limit you can make repayments on your HELP debt and then access HELP until you reach the limit again.

You can find more information about these changes and how they may affect you on the Australian government’s StudyAssist website.
