Curtin has honoured its former Vice-Chancellor, Professor Lance Twomey AO, by naming a new lecture theatre in his honour.
Former Chancellors, Vice-Chancellors, members of the Curtin council and staff attended the ceremony that saw the lecture theatre in building 408 renamed the Lance Twomey Lecture Theatre.
Professor Twomey served as Vice-Chancellor and President of Curtin from 1997 until 2006. His long association with Curtin began in 1969 as a lecturer in physiotherapy with the then Western Australian Institute of Technology.
During his tenure as Vice-Chancellor both domestic and international student enrolments grew significantly. In 1998 Curtin’s first major overseas campus was developed and launched in Miri, Sarawak in Malaysia.
Professor Twomey has been honoured twice with the Order of Australia medal, becoming a Member in 1996 and an Officer 2007. He was awarded the Centennial Medal by the Australian Government for services to university education in 2000 and received the prestigious honour of being made a Dato by the Malaysian Government in 2008.
