Five thousand people are expected to attend Curtin Student Guild’s annual Oktoberfest this year, making this the biggest university event in the southern hemisphere.

Curtin Student Guild Activities Vice President Matt Grant said more than 3500 tickets have been sold in the first three days of sales.

‘Tickets always sell out quickly every year but this year it’s been absolutely ridiculous,’ he said.

‘We sold over 2500 tickets in the first day.’

Last year, 1600 people packed the Curtin Tavern for the event. To accommodate the increase in numbers this year, the event will be held on Edinburgh Oval for the first time.

Mr Grant said a range of DJ’s, German bands and cover bands will be performing on two large stages to be assembled on opposite ends of the oval.

More than 95 staff will be on hand to serve food and drinks and over 60 security officers will be roaming the premises.

Shuttle buses and taxis will be running from the event into the city and to nearby train stations throughout the night.

Mr Grant said everything has been put in place to make sure the event runs smoothly, safely and successfully.

‘It’s still the same old Oktoberfest,’ he said.

‘It’s just bigger!’
