John de Laeter was a giant of Australian science who played a seminal role in the early development of Curtin University. He was the inaugural head of Curtin’s Department of Physics and later became Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Development until his retirement in 1995. Professor de Laeter died on August 15 2010 at the age of 77. He left a legacy as the driving force behind Technology Park, Scitech and the Gravity Discovery Centre at Gingin.
