Global threats from new and resurgent viruses: what might we expect in the future?

Professor John Mackenzie is a scientist with an outstanding international reputation in the field of microbiology and its impacts on public health.
His major areas of research have been in the ecology of Australian arboviruses and on novel emerging zoonotic viruses from wildlife.
He has been involved with the Global Outbreak Alert and Response Network of the World Health Organisation since 2000, serving as Chair of its Steering Committee in 2009.
Professor Mackenzie was involved in the global response to Swine Flu in 2009-10 as the Chair of the Emergency Committee of the International Health Regulations, which provided public health advice on the pandemic to the Director-General of the World Health Organisation.

Aileen Plant was Professor of International Health and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Biosecurity Cooperative Research Centre for Emerging Infectious Disease at Curtin. At the height of the SARS epidemic Professor Plant was invited by WHO to lead its investigation in Vietnam. In 2003, the Vietnamese Government awarded her the National Medal of Honour.
