A book released by Curtin University’s Black Swan Press has been shortlisted for the 2011 Western Australian Premier’s Book Awards.
Powering Perth: The History of the East Perth Power Station was shortlisted in the Western Australian History category of the Awards.
Edited by Perth historian Lenore Layman, Powering Perth tracks the East Perth Power Station’s history from its construction in 1916 through to its closure and subsequent plans for redevelopment.
This year a record 596 were entries were submitted for consideration for the Awards, compared with 571 in 2010.
Professor Graham Seal, Black Swan Press Publisher, said it was an honour for everyone involved in putting this book together to be recognised with this nomination.
“Black Swan Press has a history of producing texts that document important chapters of Western Australia’s cultural and economic history,” Professor Seal said.
“Being a smaller publisher, we are in a position to tell the local story of WA and produce books that sometimes have a more niche audience.”
This year, Black Swan Press is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
Established in 1992, Black Swan Press has published innovative, pioneering and best-selling titles including Jon Stratton’s The Young Ones, June Lacy’s Off-Shears: A History of Western Australian Shearing Sheds and David Black’s In His Own Words: John Curtin’s Speeches and Writings.
