Four Curtin University graduates recently won big at the 2013 Australian Cannes Young Lions national awards competition for their creative advertising campaign skills.
Our Australian winners will fly to France to participate in the Cannes International Festival of Creativity, where they will showcase their winning work to international creative executives.
The Young Lions awards see teams of two developing a campaign to increase brand awareness and donation revenue for the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.
Curtin graduates won the Digital and the Print categories. Attadale resident and Curtin Creative Advertising graduate, Liam Riddler, said the competition required them to think of a simple solution, as they only had 24 hours to come up with the final product.
“We knew we were up against high calibre competitors, so we had to rethink the ways we could create something impactful with only a few clicks from the audience,” Mr Riddler said.
“To get people to donate, we felt it was important to make the audience feel something when viewing the ad and we found YouTube was a great medium for this.”
Print category winner and previous Canning Vale resident, Josie Fox, said her team’s biggest challenge was making something go viral using a print medium, which was something they hadn’t considered previously.
“We think our entry stood out because it took the idea beyond print and into other mediums,” Ms Fox said.
“We slept only four hours during the 24 hour brief period, spending a substantial amount of time pulling apart the brief, which we believe made a huge difference.”
