Curtin University’s School of Built Environment has appointed a leading academic in virtual reality, as it looks to strengthen its research and teaching profile in Building Information Modelling (BIM).
With more than 10 years experience in virtual reality, Professor Xiangyu Wang has been appointed to a new position which will allow him to use the frontier technologies BIM and Virtual and Augmented Reality (VAR) in constructing buildings in virtual settings.
Head of Curtin’s School of Built Environment (SOBE), Professor Peter Davis, said Professor Wang’s appointment had come at a time when technology has become a necessity in developing architectural vision.
“In countries such as Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States and the United Kingdom, governments are beginning to request that submissions for infrastructure projects are designed using BIM,” Professor Davis said.
“The number of academics who have the knowledge and skills to undertake research using frontier technology in Australia is limited.
“I welcome Professor Xiangyu Wang to Curtin University and look forward to his contribution to the School of Built Environment,” he said.
Professor Wang said he was excited to be starting at Curtin in a role that would require him to strengthen the university’s research and teaching profile in BIM programs, as well as industrial connections.
“I am delighted to be at Curtin University and look forward to contributing to Curtin’s School of Built Environment, especially in the development of architectural and construction vision using virtual reality.”
Professor Wang is an internationally recognised researcher in the use of VAR and BIM in architecture, engineering and construction.
He is on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Computing in Civil and Building Engineering (ISCCBE) and also the Chair of Australian National Committee of ISCCBE.
