In a bold – or perhaps bald – act Curtin University staff member Kat Jujnovich is shaving her cherished hair to raise money for people living with cancer.
Student Services Manager at Curtin Business School and long-time Curtin employee, Kat will be taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave (WGS), one of Australia’s biggest fundraising events for the Leukaemia Foundation.
Kat, who is taking part in her first WGS, said she took up the challenge to shave her shoulder length hair, after hearing some workplace banter.
“The girls had nominated some of the men in the office to shave their heads but most have the primped and pampered metrosexual-style hairdo that requires heaps of product and constant attention,” she said.
“Although the boys pulled out, I thought it would be great to continue the challenge and raise money and awareness for the Leukaemia Foundation.”
Kat said the WGS was a fantastic charity event that encouraged people of all ages to get involved and help those suffering from a life-threatening illness.
“It’s a brilliant challenge as it sees people of all ages getting amongst the community and giving back to those who need it most,” she said.
Also taking part in the charity event and hoping to raise more than $1,000 is Curtin student Michael Rainone.
The 18-year-old commerce student said shaving his trademark curly hair was nerve-racking, but was something he had always wanted to do.
“I always donate to charity, so I thought I should take a step further this year and have an influence on others who may not be so charitable,” Michael said.
Last year Curtin raised $31,000 and retained the Inter University Challenge Award for raising the most funds of any WA university for the Leukaemia Foundation.
About 100 staff and students will colour or shave their hair outside Curtin’s Hayman Hall (Building 102) on Thursday 15 March, between 11am and 2pm, with assistance from on-campus hair dressing salon, Fringe Benefits.
If you would like to be involved please contact Maureen Meredith, Campus Community Liaison Officer, on 9266 2118 or visit her in Building 599 at the Bentley Campus.
