A Curtin University student committed to improving the impact of climate change around the world has been awarded a prestigious Global Voices Scholarship.
Miss Tiffany Verga, aged 22 from Atwell and studying a Bachelor of Arts and Commerce at Curtin, will attend the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as part of the Global Voices Scholarship Program.
Curtin University Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Professor Jill Downie congratulated Miss Verga on her achievement.
“Global Voices Scholarships are awarded to young, inspiring leaders who are committed to making a difference to the world we live in today. Successful recipients will take part in dedicated policy-writing workshops, media engagement training, institutional visits, and professional networking opportunities,” Professor Downie said.
“We wish Miss Verga all the best for her exciting scholarship and look forward to seeing her achievements and outcomes in the climate change space following the program.”
Miss Verga said she was honoured to receive the Global Voices Scholarship and was passionate about making a meaningful difference in addressing the effects of climate change.
“I first witnessed the impact of climate change when I visited my family in Beijing, China as a child. I always struggled with this memory, knowing my family was unable to relocate and was directly exposed to the public health risk caused by pollution,” Miss Verga said.
“That was 15 years ago, and now globally we are facing the biggest threat to global health in the 21st century. Australia is already dealing with the effects of increasing temperatures and has faced devastating bushfires, flooding, fewer rainfall periods and increasing drought seasons.
“To have the opportunity to learn from leaders in the climate space about what is being enacted globally would expand my knowledge and assist me in my goal to positively contribute to the landscape of climate reporting nationwide and influence the carbon discussion in Australia. I look forward to joining my peers in this prestigious scholarship program.”
The Global Voices Scholarship Program consists of three elements: participation in a Pre-Departure Briefings program which will be delivered online, a completion of a Policy Fellowship, and attendance at an international delegation.
