A group of Curtin University students is calling on members of the public to join them in raising funds for cancer research at the inaugural Relay for Life Curtin University.
Five students from Curtin’s John Curtin Leadership Academy (JCLA) are looking to attract 30 teams for the 24-hour relay challenge that will take place at the Bentley Campus on 14 – 15 April.
Relay for Life Curtin University event co-organiser, Sarah Henn, a biomedical science student from Kensington, said all five students involved in coordinating the event had strong reasons for supporting the Cancer Council.
“I have been involved in previous Relays and have found the experience both moving and enjoyable,” Sarah said.
“Following my studies, I hope to work in the field of medical research, so the work the Cancer Council does is obviously something close to my heart.”
Sarah’s teammate, Honours student in International Relations Laura Tomizzi, said the team is busy planning a range of entertainment for the event that sees teams of people complete a 24-hour relay around a sporting oval.
“We are looking at everything from comedy acts, live bands, midnight games and even a Zumba class,” Laura said.
“Prizes will be on offer for team challenges, so we are hoping people will get a team together to help us create an uplifting and inspiring environment.
“The Relay lasts for 24 hours to symbolise that cancer never sleeps and those with cancer live with it 24 hours a day.”
While this may be biggest public event that Sarah and Laura have coordinated, they are no strangers to helping out with community programs and initiatives.
Laura has been the editor of a student newspaper, a volunteer with World Vision and next month will head to the United States as part of the Australian delegation for the Harvard National Model United Nations in Boston.
Sarah has been involved with Curtin’s Student Ambassador Program, John Curtin Weekend, Leavers Green Team and is currently President of Curtin’s Biomedical Science Club.
Both students, along with their three other JCLA teammates, are hoping that Relay for Life Curtin University becomes an annual event.
“We have all been working hard on this project from day one and we are really hoping that others will join us to make this a truly special event with lasting benefits for the community,” Sarah said.

Relay for Life is an incredible overnight event that is an opportunity for family, friends and colleagues to get together with the community and celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost to cancer, and fight back against a disease that takes too much.
It is a unique event where teams of 10 to 15 challenge themselves to take turns to keep a baton moving in a relay style walk or run overnight. Each event is unique and you can stay for the whole event, camp overnight, or just visit and enjoy the free entertainment, prizes and ceremonies that make Relay for Life so inspirational.
Each person on the team pays a registration fee which includes a polo shirt and breakfast at the event. Participants are supported in their fundraising efforts in the lead up to the event.
