In response to power industry skill shortages and demand for advanced technological solutions, Curtin University of Technology and Western Power signed a sponsorship agreement this week aimed at increasing expertise in the power industry.
Western Power will provide Curtin’s Department of Electrical & Computer Engineering with close to $1 million over a five year period to fund a Chair in Power Engineering, together with five undergraduate bursaries.
Professor Jeanette Hacket Vice Chancellor, Curtin University explained the benefits of the Western Power partnership.
“Enhancing the alignment between education and research outcomes with the power industry will be a major success of this sponsorship agreement,”Professor Hacket said.
“A direct result of this collaboration will be an increase in the quantity and quality of students, and the development of sustainable strategies for all power engineering related programs.”
Professor Syed Islam, Head of Electrical Engineering at Curtin believes industry collaboration is essential in order to offer students the skills and experience they require to be of value to the industry.
“The Western Power bursaries will not only encourage each student with $8000 over a four year period, but will also offer work experience and vacation employment which of course will add to their learning,”Professor Islam explained.
“The added benefit will be the appointment of a Chair in Power Engineering, who will ensure teaching and training as well as research and development have a particular focus on industry needs.”
The Chair in Power Engineering will not only manage the commitment to industry, but ensure Western Australia’s share of new opportunities in power engineering are exploited on a national and international level. This position is to be advertised internationally and it is hoped an appointment will be made by September.
