With massive growth predicted for WA’s oil and gas industry, the education of the next generation of petroleum engineers is vitally important.
To make sure that the demand for qualified workers is met, Curtin University of Technology and Woodside Energy are offering Woodside Petroleum Engineering Scholarships that include a total of $35,000 in cash payments, for undergraduate engineering students from 2010.
Curtin’s Head of Petroleum Engineering, Professor Brian Evans, said the scholarships were a great opportunity for high quality students who want a future in WA’s energy sector.
“The development of WA’s economy over the coming decades will be strongly linked to the growth of the oil and gas industry,” he said.
“Curtin and Woodside understand this and we are offering opportunities to promising students who can see themselves building the future of the WA energy industry.”
One scholarship will cover the standard duration of a Bachelor of Engineering (Petroleum Engineering) degree with payment of student fees and $20,000 cash over four years.
The other scholarship will be offered to the best first-year Curtin engineering student who changes courses to major in petroleum engineering in 2010. This scholarship will cover student fees, a cash payment of $15,000 over three years.
“One scholarship is available for students applying directly from high school while the other is available for students completing their first year of engineering at Curtin,” Professor Evans said.
Scholarship recipients may also be offered vacation employment with Woodside Energy, Australia’s largest publicly-listed oil and gas exploration and production company, and one of the world’s leading producers of liquefied natural gas.
Woodside’s Chief Reservoir Engineer, Ian Sylvester, said the company needed good engineers to sustain its growth into a major global supplier of cleaner energy.
“That is why Woodside continues to develop our people and why we are supporting these scholarships to attract the best and brightest students to Petroleum Engineering at Curtin,” Mr Sylvester said.
