Curtin University has launched a new Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), which will explore the role of social movements, advocacy groups and different forms of activism in bringing about social change.
The MOOC, Human Rights Activism, Advocacy and Change, will explore a range of ways to bring about social and political changes necessary to realise human rights, including in relation to issues such as gender equality, self-determination and the rights of refugee communities.
Senior Lecturer and Course Coordinator Dr Caroline Fleay, from Curtin’s Centre for Human Rights, said the course will explore and critique social movements including activist and advocacy campaigns across the globe.
“The 11-week course will enable students to learn about the important role that social movements and advocacy groups play in ensuring that human rights are respected, protected and promoted in our societies,” Dr Fleay said.
“Some of the topics that will be explored in the course include specific movements and campaigns that illustrate the diversity of philosophies, methods and outcomes.
“These important subjects will help students learn about the role of social movements, advocacy groups and activism in bringing about social and political change.”
Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor Academic Associate Professor Jon Yorke said the course offered a great opportunity for students to receive a credential from Curtin University.
“It is important to adapt to the new ways of learning and teaching, and our MOOCs provide fantastic opportunities for anyone across the globe to access these programs online,” Associate Professor Yorke said.
The MOOC is part of the MicroMasters in Human Rights program and learners must verify, complete and pass all three MOOCs within the program to earn a MicroMasters in Human Rights credential. This credential provides a pathway to Curtin’s Master of Human Rights degree.
The MicroMasters programs are delivered on the edX online learning platform founded by Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
Curtin is the only university in Western Australian in the edX Consortium.
Registrations for Human Rights Activism, Advocacy and Change are open and the course starts today (31 July 2017).
